The guys at Walcraft Cabinetry were helpful beyond what I expected. I researched RTA cabinets online to the point of obsession. I decided to take a chance on Walcraft because of their story. My research indicated that pricing was all pretty consistent, the big difference was in the service I received when calling. I have never installed cabinets before but I’m a pretty experienced handyman and amateur carpenter. The assembled cabinets fit…

After a lot of research I decided to go with Walcraft cabinets for our kitchen remodel simply because I could not find a single bad review. - Cabinet Quality 9/10 I don’t really have much to compare these cabinets to other than my old ones which these are much much better than. Hardware is great, the cabinets themselves were easy to install by myself and the finish on them is great. I…

Everything You Need to Know About Kitchen Cabinets

Stock RTA Kitchen Cabinets

RTA (ready to assemble) cabinetry saw it’s rise to fame around 2006. This cheaper alternative started to become a go-to for house flippers and budget-minded homeowners who were looking to remodel their kitchens.

In its infant stages RTA cabinetry was known for being junk. Low quality kitchen cabinets with low quality finishes, delaminating plywood that was unstable and filled with nasty chemicals, and cheap hardware were the norm.

Over the years, the housing market demanded cheap cabinets that were a better and more readily available alternative to American-made particle board cabinets. This began an upward trend for the RTA market that began around 2009.

As the market grew, so did the competition. Around 2010 RTA cabinets became available to purchase online. That changed the game. Since these unassembled solid wood kitchen cabinets are already built and warehoused, builders and DIY homeowners alike were able to get cabinets for their kitchen within weeks instead of months.

Now, ready-to-assemble cabinets are the perfect choice for someone seeking DIY kitchen cabinetry options.

At Walcraft, we work with the best import RTA cabinet manufacturer there is, JSI Cabinets. Their cabinetry boasts a finish that is better than many more expensive options. The build quality of their kitchen cabinets is amazing, and the options are great.

If you are willing to assemble these cabinets yourself, then there is money to save, without compromising on quality. There are many cheap kitchen cabinets available in the RTA world. JSI cabinets are not the cheapest when compared to them. You will however get MORE than what you pay for. They’re the best RTA cabinets in class! Here are the benefits:

  • Fast Delivery Times of 2-4 Weeks
  • All-Plywood Box Construction
  • Maple Solid Wood Door and Face Frame Construction
  • MDF Center Panels With Wood Veneer (MDF Is the Best Option for Center Panels)
  • Premium Sherwin Williams Finishes
  • The Best Assembly Process Available
  • Solid Wood Dovetail Drawers
  • Soft-Close Doors and Drawers

Stock / Boxed Kitchen Cabinets

For many years stock kitchen cabinetry has been abundantly available. These pre-built cabinets come in three inch increment widths. Many manufacturers build to order, with very few having them built and ready to ship.

Stock kitchen cabinets are not customizable, they come in a limited amount of options, and are typically always made in America using globally sourced parts and materials.

Stock kitchen cabinets are common to big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes.

The quality of stock cabinets can vary dramatically, from really high quality, to junk, depending on the manufacturer. At Walcraft, we do not carry stock cabinetry, but we do carry semi-custom.

Semi-Custom Kitchen Cabinets

Semi-custom cabinets begin their journey just like stock cabinets. The major difference is options. A semi-custom line is just that. Not completely custom, but not limited either. Often semi-custom lines have custom color options, as well as other features such as custom molding options, cabinets sizes, and cabinet depths.

These cabinets are perfect for someone who knows what they want in their kitchen, has a budget, but is willing to pay a little more to get it just right!

Once again, quality can vary greatly from one manufacturer to the next. At Walcraft we work with the best semi-custom manufacture: Fabuwood Cabinets. They make a quality value-minded cabinet, and have a great reputation!

Custom Kitchen Cabinets

A true custom cabinet can be whatever you want it to be. Whatever color, size, shape, or wood species. This is truly cabinetry without walls and without limitations. And you will pay for it.

If money is not an option and you want exactly what you want, then custom may be for you. BUT BE WARNED.

Just because it is custom, does not make it better. Some custom cabinet makers create masterful woodwork’s and others do not. Do your research well and make sure you check references. Get what you pay for and nothing less.

We have seen custom kitchen cabinets that costs 2-3 times more than our RTA line and is lower quality. Custom is custom, not necessarily better.
